SMHA MEMORIAL CUP LEGACY FUND

SMHA is extremely thankful to be the beneficiary of funding from the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup held in Saskatoon and hosted by the Saskatoon Blades.

The Blades ownership at the time, headed by Governor, Jack Brodsky, provided the SMHA a donation of $50,000 to start the Memorial Cup Legacy Fund. SMHA thanks Mr. Brodsky for his generous donation to start this fund.

The purpose of this fund is to assist families to stay in the game.  It is designed to assist families with fees beyond the registration fees. Its mandate does not include the funding of registration fees.  There are several programs that are available to assist with registration fees such as KidSport, HelpOne and Jumpstart.

Examples of items funded by the SMHA Memorial Cup Legacy Fund include:

  • Team fees paid by parents to the team budget for additional team items like additional ice time, tournament entry fees, etc.

  • Hockey equipment

  • Assistance with transportation in the form of taxi vouchers

SMHA is very fortunate to have SaskSport partner with it on the administration of this fund.  SaskSport has the tools necessary to administer the fund because of their involvement with KidSport.  SMHA thanks SaskSport for administering this fund at zero administrative cost to SMHA or to the fund.

The Memorial Cup Legacy Fund received a funding boost in 2017 from the Hockey Canada Foundation Gala held in Saskatoon in July 2017.  A portion of the event proceeds was allocated to the Memorial Cup Legacy Fund.  $83,000 was added to the fund to allow SMHA to have a fund that will assist its families for years to come.

Thank you to the Hockey Canada Foundation and to the Host Steering Committee, chaired by Blair Davidson, for including the SMHA's Memorial Cup Legacy Fund as a benefactor of the Gala.

In November 2018, the Saskatoon Host Committee of the 4 Nations Cup allowed SMHA to receive the benefits of the 50-50 from the eight games of the international women's hockey tournament featuring the four top women's hockey nations in the world - Canada, USA, Finland and Sweden.  The 50-50 generated over $12,000 that was put directly into the SMHA's Memorial Cup Legacy Fund.

SMHA thanks the 4 Nations Cup Host Committee for their support of minor hockey families in Saskatoon.

In January 2021, the Saskatoon branches of Scotiabank made an $8,000 donation to the SMHA Memorial Cup Legacy Fund.  Thank you to Trevor Humphries and Joanne Fisher of Scotiabank for thinking of SMHA and the Memorial Cup Legacy Fund.

In September 2022, Scotiabank made another donation of $7,000 to the Fund!  Thank you to Trevor Humphries and Scotiabank for again thinking of SMHA and the Memorial Cup Legacy Fund!

In September 2022, the Saskatoon 60+ Hockey League made a donation of $8,000 to the Fund!  The proceeds were from the 2022 80+ Hall of Fame event they hosted in April 2022.  Thank you to all involved with the 60+ Hockey League!

In March 2023, the Saskatoon Blades made a donation of $5,000 to the Fund!  Thank you to the Blades ownership and management!
